I met Peter and Mark Saturno from Longview Vineyards for the first time at the Australian Football League’s match between Port Adelaide and the Sydney Suns in Shanghai 3 years ago. We enjoyed a few beers during the warm afternoon as Port Power easily won the game.
Following on from the AFL game in China, I had the opportunity to visit Mark and Peter at their Macclesfield winery in August 2017. I was truly impressed by the winery and the manicured vineyards set on the scenic undulating Adelaide Hills. And just after Christmas 2019, I returned to Longview with the family and we had a wonderful afternoon hosted by Peter in their amazing cellar door, tasting their latest vintage.
Jessy and Peter talking business.
My first encounter with Longview wines happened at Baker and Spice on Anfu Lu in Shanghai. I was browsing their impressive selection when I came across the 2013 ‘Red Bucket’ Shiraz Cabernet. I bought a couple, tried them and was immediately hooked by the elegance, intensity, and richness of the wine. As it turned out, the Longview Red Bucket, ‘Devil’s Elbow’ Cabernet, and ‘Yakka’ Shiraz were some of the first wines we distributed in China in the early days. And since 2019, we have imported 4 of their estate-grown wines- ‘Vista’ Shiraz Barbera, ‘Iron Knob’ Riesling, ‘Whippet’ Sauvignon Blanc, and the Nebbiolo ‘Rosato’.
In a couple of weeks, we are expecting our next shipment of Longview wines including the super-premium ‘The Piece Shiraz’, ‘Fresco’ light red, Gruner Veltliner, and ‘Queenie’ Pinot Gris.
Stay tuned for updates and tasting notes.
