We were on the lookout for small, emerging, innovative South Australian wineries to bring to China. We discovered that many AUS wineries already have Chinese importers but their wines are invisible- you can’t find them online or in retail shops.
Adelaide is known as a city in which you can get anywhere in 20 minutes. City to the beach? 20 minutes. City to the Hills? 20 minutes. And people are usually separated by two degrees. Geoff Thompson, founder, and winemaker of Grounded Cru is a mate of a mate.
A couple of years back I was chatting to one of my old workmates in wine retail who suggested Geoff and Grounded Cru. After talking with Geoff, we brought over some samples and tasted them. In fact, I can still see the original samples on the shelf in my office.
Fast forward to July 2019 and we were negotiating our first shipment from Geoff including the Pinot Gris, Rose, Shiraz, Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre (GSM), and the Cabernet Shiraz Malbec (CSM). The second shipment is on its way.
With Grounded Cru, you can sense the passion that Geoff brings to his wines. They are superbly crafted and truly represent the style of wines from the ‘Creek, Hills, and Vale’- Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills, and Mc Laren Vale.
For me, the stand out wine was the 2018 Pinot Gris. I remember writing in my tasting journal ‘moreish’ and ‘textured, balanced with a gentle mouthfeel’. Then came the classic McLaren Vale reds- the Shiraz and the GSM. These reds are soft, rounded, and full of flavour.
We are very happy to be partnering with Geoff and Grounded Cru and hope you enjoy his wines as much as we do.
